If one remembers, the articles related to Kherlanji Brutal Massacre were reported by one or two local news papers in the initial days of Kherlanji Mishappening. It is generally guessed that Indian (Print & Electronic) Media`s Coverage Sensitivity Monitors calculates intensity of issues and then decides on whether to publish it or not. And if it is a Buddhist or Dalit issue, the monitor counts Zero, so no coverage.
However post Kherlanji, Atrocitynews constantly encouraged people to educate/persuade Media to highlight Dalit human rights issue . Thanks to International media ! which took early cognizance of the Kherlanji call . We understood then that people’s words create social value if they are genuine. Subsequently, with efforts from all of you aware citizens, from last week of October, most of the media, print & electronic then could able to notice the public wrath in the form of people agitations here and there. It was starnge for Media to notice protest were not lead by any political leader but people themselves. Many organizations not only dalit but from diverse background like OBCs and other religious affiliations extended their participation in the protest making them more secular and global. On the other hand, Indian media was seen engulfed into great confusion that if they didn’t highlight Dalit issues that time atleast, they might envelop themselves into casteist identity, specially, when their international counterpart widely responded very early. It is reported that 12 international papers gave frontline coverage to Mass Buddhist conversion & celebrations of Dhamma Chkra Parivartan Day on 2nd October. BBC took early stance in Kherlanji too.
We could see domestic media slowly coming out of the psychosis of confusion and joining in the global campaign against Caste prejudices, as a part of global human rights movement. TOI, NDTV, CNN IBN7 and Tehelka(Tahelka did it right first!) took solid efforts in taking Kherlanji to deaf ears that have larger might. But the water is still not clear, we can still sense some deeply perverted views within media circuits those find hard to accept Kherlanji protest as true secular public protest. Fault is not theirs, State is also responsible in some way.
We saw how Indian police force was making people blind with obnoxious theories of Naxal links or other terrorist ulterior motives with Kherlanji protest. However in the world of fast communication as of today, the confusions have very little life. These falacies vanish off fast when people communicate. The people empowerment would happen more as dalit-educated-lot joins level playing positions in every spheres of life and help their rural brethrens. Also in the economic process of communication when Dalits become sizable part of Indian middleclass, no enterprise otherwise would afford to ignore them. We see the free market economy asks for creativity and value creation. Till the time caste rules elites in India, the essential public services will not have true secular flavour; case is already made into Media and Administartion sector with Kherlanji Massacre. Its also true that one may not be able to add 100% to global creativity, subsequently standard of living suffers heavily now and then for globe.
Whatever may be the case, the world of prejudices always belittles world creativity. It offers not only individual psychological sufferings but social suffering .To identify the caste fatigue, encouraging free flowing dialogues among academic and professional spheres is must. It is, though, true that the caste notion will take time to eradicate or may not happen in 100 years or so, but inclusion of diverse views in mainstream media is the best middle path policy to have, it will surely give out more creativity -more artistic expressions, more life sharing that should increase life of the planet. Media has central role to pass on similar messages to every sane being. In this background, we appreciate certain media efforts that brought up Kherlanji story in their main bulletins. But that is not enough , we have 221 Kherlanji happening every year in India. Long way to go!
In case of Kherlanji, when the protest reached pinnacle stage, all local papers took notice of it and put them in different shades on their front page, most of them saw it violent, though, nobody was killed in complete protest. Very few tried to go down to real roots of the suffering. Same is with National media. The learning is slow process, things will take shape and some section of media will find time to learn difference between problem and suffering. Kherlanji has become best case for them to understand social suffering. Learning Indicator is ticking as media makes Kherlanji as a watershed event. We appreciate that, however, we feel deeply strapped for space and time to provide how they covered Kherlanji in last week or so.
But we will try to convey their view point here ..
Till then keep writing to us>>
Fight for dignity and equality is on>>
A. Intial days- Print Media
Times Of India:
Just another rape story
Educated people have deceived us!
1. Dalits, like flies to feudal lords
2. Justice for all, folks

B. Media ills
This is yet another instance of yellow journalism , the Kherlanji episode is crafted to fit in the satisfaction of oppressors.
A Nagpur based Lokmat news agency reported that the reason of massacre was nothing but an illicit relationship of mother,Surekha with Siddharth Gajbhiye( albeit they are relatives). This is dengerous journalism that misuses pen for short term financial and political gains underestimating the long term fight for equality. Because courage is rare vertue !
Lets engineer a courage and respond to the situation so that human cause remains central to Indian democratic life! Therefore, if you have any views , please write to us on firstname.lastname@example.org
Off late effect: People gathered in Bhandara to burn the Local News paper, Lokmat in protest against it`s reasoning of illicit relationship in Kherlanji Massacre. This is cheap Journalism and the news agnecy is responsible for such ill research. May be managed research by Landlords!
pic1:Public treatment to ill communication
It is interesting to see the market dynamics here. The Dalits in this area are better educated and they are the single most reading community to this news paper for want of any other news paper. But that could not deter this News agency from publishing the near nature of the case . May be the agency could have got more benefits than mre subscription revenue tehy get from readers ? Is this the way Free market economy brings value to society . Markets seemed to be skewed towards controlling forces of resources than towards secular forces of demand and supply, atleast in Media circuits.
Result: Meanwhile Police had issued a statement that this is a sheer case of an Atrocity .
C. Plea to media
1. Letter from Pune to Star News
“Dear Star news,
Pease do not promote misinformation about the Nagpur agitation as a political agitation. It is not a political agitation. The citizens are not instigated by any political party, but they are protesting against the heinous caste system. You can find the details of the Khairlanji indidence on https://atrocitynews.wordpress.com .Even after a month, there are lapses in the enquiry process and soem of the culprits are moving free after committing a crime. The incident involved humiliation of mother and her daughter who were paraded naked, gang raped and later killed. The two male members were also killed. Please use the media to tell the truth and for the humanitarian cause.
2. Letter to Star News
“Dear Shree Kalra,
We fail to understand consistently why deliberate attempts are made either to completely negate the existence of Dalit movement or ill represent it. More often than not, their struggle is picturised as a politicized event or extension to it.Which infact is not true. Same is happening this time too. When a neo-Buddhist family is exterminated by Castiest mentalities in Kherlanji and police are busy protecting the assailants(some of them roaming around freely terrorizing others), what would people do? The anger is oozing out. Natural is then their coming on the streets and protesting for justice. Positively, till date, the Kherlanji demonstrations and mass protest was conspicuous by the absence of politicians. On the other hand in Nagpur today’s protest, one must notice the crowd has disfigured the pictures of Dalit politicians irrespective of their party affiliations! Moreover the office of sitting Dalit MLA from North was burnt! What does it show? Its not a political event, we must admit people are ready todecide for what they want? They want justice; anger is just a byproduct of media neglect. If media reacts timely just in case of Motto, situations can be different.
We see Nagpur is burning today, tomorrow it will be India, it’s not because Dalits are communal in expressing their anger, it’s because the government machinery is encroached by sterility and corruption.I think in 21st century, star group has big responsibility that it should reflect upon. Does it want to be only a media mogul miniting money or a pillar of world democracy fighting for real cause? Choice is already made if Star is to lead people into better civilization; they have to show real courage to portray real issue and become party to world peace.
The fight for equality is not stopping here even if voices are not heard, you can check it out on www.atrocitynews.wordpress.com . People`s forum from last 20 days updating the latest on Kherlanji Massacre. Completely non-political effort !
Much media can do for humanity, Take lead, Have courage!
ATROCITY NEWS …..”
