Attack on Dalit basti; 13 Dalits injured | Castevirus 011 MH 2013
Around 60 men and women of Maratha caste entered in Dalit area of Rajwada and allegedly attacked causing serious head injuries to 13 Dalits on October 20 in Shevge Dang village of Nashik district in a revenge of a minor incident where the son belongs to Dalit asked for compensation to Maratha driver for his mother’s injuries by his tempo.
According to the police report, the outrage ensued in a backdrop of small accident of a tempo owned by Maratha caste person that collide onto tree on October 15, where several passengers in it got injuries.
50-year-old Dalit woman Lata Bharit was also get injured in the same accident and his son went to the driver for compensation.
“My son went to Chandrakant Shinde, the driver, and asked for compensation. He was abused and sent back. Both parties approached the police and the issue was resolved amicably,” said Lata.
“While the Dalit families assumed the situation was normal, the Maratha men had begun to conspire. They waited for most of the villagers to leave for their daily work, and then attacked,” said investigating officer and SDPO R N Hazare.
All attackers belongs to dominant Maratha caste came in tractors, carrying sickles, knives, bricks and boulders in a broad day light of Sunday, complaint villagers.
The police have registered an FIR for attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy and dacoity under the IPC. So far 11 Maratha men have been arrested yet, police said.
