Caste India takes toll of IT brain, Saujanya !
Four days after angry citizens stormed the Koparkhairne police station with the body of 24-year-old Saujanya Jadhav, the police arrested eight persons accused of harassing the suicide victim and her family. There was a public outcry over the death of Saujanya, a computer hardware engineer who was allegedly harassed by some “politically-connected goons” in Koparkhairne. Home minister Jayant Patil had assured on Thursday that all culprits in the suicide case would be arrested. Among the eight held are Suresh Sanas alias Daji and his brother Vilas Sanas (who is the husband of NCP corporator Rupali Sanas). The other accused arrested are Rajendra Bhor, Ratnakar Awate, Kumar Gole, Sandeep Dhonde, Alka Bhor and Manisha Bhor. All eight have been remanded in police custody till July 19. They have been held for rioting, unlawful assembly, house trespass, harming the modesty of a woman and causing hurt with dangerous weapon under Sections 141, 143, 147, 149, 452, 509, 323, 324 and 325 of the Indian Penal Code. They have also been charged under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The victim’s mother, Mangala Jadhav, told mediapersons, “We are relieved that some arrests have finally taken place; if the police had acted earlier, my daughter (Saujanya) would not have died.” Later, local Dalit leader visited the residence of the Jadhav family in Koparkhairne. He assured the family members that strong follow-up action would be taken in the case.
Saujanya and her sister were earlier harassed by a few local youths. When their mother complained about it to the police, the entire family was assaulted and humiliated by the accused. Her mother was also locked up on a false charge. Unable to bear this, Saujanya overdosed on sleeping pills on June 27; she died last Sunday. Senior inspector of the Koparkhairne police station, Arun Walture, said further investigations were on. Forty more people are reportedly under the scanner.
