NREGS for food & death for caste; Caste-virus 002RJ2008

A group of upper caste Hindus in Dholpur district allegedly killed four dalits on Wednesday when the dalits were reporting at the worksite of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) at Dhondekapura village. The police has launched a manhunt to arrest the persons involved in the incident, but no arrests have been made so far. According to police sources, a group of upper caste members reached the NREGS worksite and picked up five of a dalit family. The assailants killed all four one by one while another, Jitendra, sustained injuries. “The incident was the result of old enmity between the thakurs and dalits. The guilty will not be spared. The police is already after the assailants,” inspector-general of police (Bharatpur) Umesh Mishra said. According to the police, of those who were killed in the incident, three were brothers. The assailants used countrymade weapons to fire at the dalits. Three of them died in the firing while the assailants cut the throat of the fourth one.

All four died on the spot, the police said. The assailants disappeared after killing the four dalits. Senior police and administrative officials rushed to the spot to control the situation. Tension prevailed in the area and police has been asked to be alert.

Eyewitnesses said the site of incident presented a gory picture. The incident has sent shockwaves among the dalit community in Dholpur district.

“It was a well-planned incident. Crimes against dalits are on the rise in the district,” Satish Lahri, a dalit activist from Dholpur, said.

“It is more serious because Dholpur is the home district of chief minister Vasundhara Raje. We are receiving more and more complaints of atrocities against dalits from Dholpur district,” said Satish Kumar, director of the Centre For Dalit Rights in Jaipur.
